One of the first questions anyone with any sanity asks about he real estate business is “How much do real estate agents make?”  There are many searches you can do on the topic but I believe the National Association of Realtors is the single best resource for this data on a national level.  Find the 2016 Report from NAR here.

Agent CommissionsSome of the highlights of that report include:

  • The median gross income of REALTORS was $39,200, down from $45,800 in 2015.
  • REALTORS with 16 years or more experience had a median gross income of $73,400 compared to REALTORS with 2 years or less experience that had a median gross income of $8,500.

Keep in mind.  This is national.  So, let’s get real local and real personal.  I’m going to share numbers that most real estate brokerages would never share.  But you need to know so that you can make an educated decision about a career in real estate, and just as importantly, which brokerage you should choose to help you start and grow your real estate business here in suburban Kansas City.

All the following numbers are for May 2016 here at Keller Williams Realty, Diamond Partners, Inc, Olathe, KS

  • We had 229 agents in production (husband & wife teams count as 1 agent in production, etc)
  • Per NAR stats (see above) average earnings work out to be $3,266/mo per agent
  • KW-Olathe had 66 agents who had net commission income of greater than $3,266
  • Those 66 agents make up 28.8% of the agent population
  • Another 37 had at least some production
  • 45% of the office agents had one transaction or more

That is dealing with the NAR averages.  And that shows what percentage of agents are doing something and/or at least doing the national average.  What is doesn’t tell you is how many are strictly part time, brand new and or just transferred from competing offices getting their business off the ground using our extensive training system.  Now let’s talk about making some real money.

Our top agents in May of 2016...

  • 28 of our agents had net commission incomes in excess of $10,000
  • 9 of those agents had net commission incomes in excess of $29,000

That shows you a lot about the real estate business as a whole just in the month of May.

  • Just over 12% of our agents made 206% of the national average
  • 3.9% of our agents made in excess of 787% of the national average

There is a lot of data here to absorb if you are wondering how much money a real estate agent makes in the State of Kansas.  There is the average agent.  There are those that don’t make anything. And then there are those that are doing quite nicely.  Where do you see yourself in all of this?
